About this test

Height is the cleanest comparison on the site. You enter centimetres (or feet and inches), pick your country and sex, and the module places you on a normal curve fitted to that group. The global mean is 171 cm for men and 159 cm for women, with SDs of 8 and 7.5 cm.

Country means differ by more than a decade of growth. Dutch men average 182.5 cm, Norwegian men 179.7, American men 177.1, Japanese men 170.8 and Indian men 164.9. A 180 cm man is above average almost everywhere except the Netherlands.

Is 180 cm tall?

For a man, 180 cm is about the 87th percentile worldwide (mean 171, SD 8) and the 52nd percentile in Norway (mean 179.7, SD 6.7). In the Netherlands it is slightly below the mean of 182.5. Source: NCD-RisC, adults born in 1996.

What is the average height for men and women?

171 cm and 159 cm globally. In the US it is 177.1 and 163.5; in the UK 177.5 and 164.4. These are means for adults born in 1996 from NCD-RisC (eLife 2016).

Is 165 cm short for a woman?

No. 165 cm is taller than about 79% of women worldwide (mean 159, SD 7.5) and almost exactly average in Norway, where the mean is 165.6. Short is relative to the group you stand in.

Percentiles above come from the same parameters the Height module uses. See the methodology for how they are calculated.
