What percentage of food calories are wasted globally?

Approximately 30–40% of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year — around 1.3 billion tonnes. In high-income countries most waste occurs at retail and consumer stages; in low-income countries it's concentrated in production and storage. This wasted food accounts for about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
